I’m not sure that my title makes sense, but it seems to me if something is mainstream and common enough to be advertised on TV, it’s time for us as a society to reconsider whether or not there should be stigma attached to it. Maybe advertising on TV is the key to making abortion “seem” to be the common experience that it is instead of the secret and shameful act that it is perceived to be.
About a month ago, Marie Stopes International, an abortion provider in the U.K., released the first ever (that I know of) television advertisement for abortion services. It’s short and vague (the big bad A-word is never even uttered), but managed to cause a bit of an uproar regardless. I’d like to think that we here in the U.S. could handle ads for abortion on TV, but given the tenor of the last great Superbowl Ad debate, I think we’re still not there yet.
